Gold is soft, stones are set by hand, and both last generations when looked after. A few habits keep a piece looking the way it did the day you brought it home.
Wear it last, remove it first
Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take it off before swimming, sleeping or the gym. Chlorine and household cleaners dull gold and can loosen settings over time.
Cleaning at home
Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush is enough for most gold pieces. Rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and ultrasonic cleaners on stone-set or pearl jewellery.
Pearls and soft stones
Pearls, emeralds and opals should be wiped with a slightly damp cloth only — never soaked. Store them separately from harder stones so they aren't scratched.
Storage
Keep each piece in its own pouch or a lined compartment. Chains stay untangled when fastened before they're put away.
