Caring for Gold That Outlives You

Gold does not tarnish, but it is soft. Most of the damage a piece collects over a lifetime is avoidable, and none of the prevention is complicated.

Put jewellery on last. Perfume, lotion and hairspray leave a film that dulls polish and collects in settings. Take it off first, too: chlorine attacks the alloys mixed with gold, and repeated exposure can weaken claws holding a stone.

Cleaning at home needs nothing exotic. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush will lift most of what accumulates. Rinse well and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Skip toothpaste and baking soda entirely — both are abrasive enough to scratch a polished surface.

Pearls and softer stones are the exception. Emeralds, opals and pearls should never be soaked or put through an ultrasonic cleaner; a slightly damp cloth is enough. Store them apart from harder stones so they are not scratched in the box.

Storage matters more than people expect. Each piece in its own pouch, chains fastened before they are put away, and nothing stacked loose in a drawer.
